We all know that consuming human breast milk is extremely important to growing healthy, but for babies and that too for a few months in the starting. But, nowadays we are seeing an online market growing rapidly where nursing moms sell breast milk, and bodybuilders looking to build muscle are among the major buyers. Yes, you heard that right!
Recently, one mom who gave birth last August claimed that she earned approximately $6,000 by selling her breast milk to weightlifters. The 24-year-old mom, Rafaela Lamprou overproduces milk than her infant child needs, which is actually dangerous for her and can lead to uncomfortable side effects like breast engorgement and plugged ducts.
Initially, Lamprou used to sell her excess milk to moms who had trouble breastfeeding. But then men started asking if they could buy it. “It started with men who were interested in bodybuilding. They say it is good for building muscle mass,” she says. She then started a Facebook page to handle orders.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends first six months of an infant to consume only breast milk and then including other foods in baby’s diet along with breastfeeding until the child is one year old. The USDA says that one cup generally has 172 calories, 2.5 grams of protein, 10 grams of fat, and 16 grams of carbs.
According to a New York City fitness expert, Chris Ryan, breast milk has not enough protein for a grown man. While a cup of cow or soy milk contains more protein (approx. 8 grams per cup) comparatively. While breast milk is meant for babies only as they have no alternative for that, grown-ups especially bodybuilders with high protein needs should look for something else. “There are so many better options for an active adult,” Chris says.
There are also a number of risks involved in buying the breast milk which is being sold at $1/ounce. Firstly, the mom you’re buying the milk from may be suffering from an infectious disease like HIV. A mother’s diet also influences the nutritional profile of her breast milk. Second is the concern regarding the cleanliness of the pumping parts, which have to be regularly sanitized.
So people willing to buy breast milk, especially bodybuilders, just add extra weight to your workouts and look for other alternatives and leave the breast milk for the babies who need it more than you.
