Tencent Continues To Take Over Mobile Gaming

TencentIf you’re even a casual mobile gamer you’re probably familiar with the name “Tencent” by now. The Chinese holding company has made a massive splash in the world of mobile gaming by gobbling up some of the biggest developers and most popular games. Now it’s looking like the company is ready to do it again with another massive acquisition that’s set to change the mobile landscape.

Tencent made big news last summer when it exploded into the mobile gaming scene. The company had been a proponent of online gaming since 2004, but began to move into the global market with its purchase of European developers. Tencent bought Supercell in June of 2016 for a whopping $8.6 billion. Supercell are the developers behind the massively successful Clash of Clans series. Clans has been one of the most popular mobile games since its 2012 release and at one point was bringing in an estimated $1.5 million per day.

As if owning Supercell wasn’t enough, it would seem that Tencent is also looking at buying up its biggest competition. The company is currently in talks to acquire Rovio, the makers of the Angry Birds series. Buying up Rovio would have a huge impact in regard to Tencent’s influence on the ever-growing mobile gaming market, particularly on a global scale and with Western audiences. The company has made it clear that it is interested in expanding beyond China’s borders, and has announced plans to take its propriety platform, WeGame, global in July 2017.

In addition to its purchased companies, Tencent is also looking to bring its own gaming success to Europe and the United States. The company’s first-party title, Honour of Kings, has been a huge hit in China and is a freemium game mean to hold its own next to the likes of Clash of Clans. Rather than compete with itself, the company will be able to have a massive foothold in the international mobile gaming industry through a combination of subsidiary developers and in-house IP.

It should come as no surprise that Tencent is doing everything it can to entrench its dominance over the mobile gaming industry. The mobile market is worth tens of billions of dollars and is only predicted to continue to grow. This perpetual growth is particularly apparent in the world of online gaming where the majority of casino platforms are making their way to phones and tablets. These games are enjoyed by millions of players all over the world and these popular mobile hubs allow players to take their favorite games wherever they want and only keep becoming more ubiquitous.

Tencent has long established itself as force to be reckoned with in the tech world, but its continued acquisitions of other prominent mobile developers should help to propel it to the top. With Rovio and Supercell under its umbrella the company would own the rights to two of the most popular mobile titles ever, and if Honour of Kings is as big a hit in the West as it is in China it could be even more significant. Tencent may already be a well-known entity in the East, but it will likely soon be a household name in the United States as well.
